‘Why I Refused Arsenal and Tottenham Offer for 2014 W/Cup’ – Vincent Enyeama Reveals

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, has revealed the reason he refused signing for Arsenal and Tottenham while he was at the peak of his career.

Enyeama, a Nations cup winner with Nigeria, went to Israel after leaving Nigeria, joining Bnei Yehuda in 2005 before moving to Hapoel Tel Aviv in 2007 where he spent four years.

He then went to France in 2011, spending seven years at Lille where he won the Prix Marc-Vivien Foé prize of Best African player in League 1, in 2014.

Enyeama shone for Nigeria at the 2014 World Cup with his most memorable performance the 1-0 loss to Argentina where he denied Argentina and in particular Lionel Messi several opportunities to score.

After the tournament, Arsenal reportedly wanted to sign the goalkeeper and now Enyeama says he rejected Arsenal and Tottenham because of one specific reason.

Arsenal wanted me for second choice, but I was not interested. I also had an offer from Tottenham that wanted me for second choice also and I wasn’t interested; ..

Enyeama told ESPN

It was after the 2006 Nations Cup and then again around the 2014 World Cup. When I turned them down, that is when they [Arsenal] took David Ospina.

For me, I was at the stage where I preferred playing even if it was for one of the smallest teams. That is what the agents that were involved told me. That Arsene (Wenger) wanted me but he is not so sure because of my height and things like that.

People have their choices and I respect their choices.

Enyeama also said he wonders why he never signed for British club Bolton Wanders despite going for a trial at the club in the early 2000s.

“I am still wondering why I didn’t sign. It was a trial that went so well,” he continued.

“They even told me I was going to get jersey number 35. All that was left was just to do the medicals.

“I was supposed to be number three, because Bolton had two goalkeepers already, with Jussi Jaaskelainen as number one.

“But I don’t regret it because it gave me the opportunity to go to Israel. I am so happy that I went to Israel because it opened doors for me.”

Xavi Agrees to Replace Quique Setien as New Manager of the Club for £5.4 Million Deal

Xavi is set to become Barcelona manager from the beginning of next season, with a report in Spain claiming he’s already agreed to take over from Quique Setien.

Things at Barcelona are not in a good place right now, having recently lost top spot in La Liga to their rivals Real Madrid, and on Thursday night it was reported that Lionel Messi was ready to leave the club after next season.

However, the club may already be taking steps to try and keep the forward, according to Mundo Deportivo journalist Francesc Aguilar, the Barcelona icon ‘Xavi’ has agreed to take over the club next season.

The tweets from Aguilar say the former Barca midfielder doesn’t want to take over until after the Champions League in August but there is an agreement in principle.

“In the agreement between Barça and Xavi to train the Barça club from next season, the calls of several important members of the squad would have had great weight, asking Xavi to take the step, who had his full support.” Aguilar tweeted.

Quique Setién, is a Spanish professional football manager and former player who is the manager of La Liga club Barcelona. As a player, he played in the central midfield position.

Setien, 61, has been under intense pressure since replacing Ernesto Valverde in January, and there are speculations that the club’s board have already decided to sack him in order to pave the way for Xavi.

According to Mundo Deportivo, a “firm agreement” has been finalized and it would see Barcelona pay Xavi, 40, a bumper £5.4million per year. He is expected to take up the reins at the end of the season.

Part of the reports yesterday about Messi’s potential departure centered on the lack of a successful project on the pitch and some claimed the Argentine wanted either Xavi or Ronald Koeman as the next manager.

Seeing his former teammate, and the man who helped assist him on a lot of occasions, become the new boss could help persuade the club’s all time top scorer to stay beyond next summer.

Nigerian Striker, Odion Ighalo’s future at Manchester United is Shaky

The Nigerian Striker, Odion Ighalo’s future at Manchester United is Shaky as Shanghai Shenhua has ordered Ighalo’s return to training next week Monday.

The parent Chinese club, Shanghai Shenhua where ighalo belongs has ordered him to return for full training with the club at the end of this month, when his loan deal with Manchester United expires.

Ighalo joined Manchester United on the last day of January, securing a loan move till the end of the season, and United were desperate to keep a hold of him following his good performances for the club but the Coronavirus imposed football break has changed the landscape of things.

As it is now, unless Manchester United are willing to make full contract negotiations with Shanghai Shenhua, Ighalo will be forced to return to China for the start of the Chinese football league season.

Although Ighalo wanted to stay at Manchester United despite receiving a lower salary than what he is used to at Shanghai, Shanghai Shenhua have rejected United’s requests to keep Ighalo at Old Trafford for another three months.

According to Daily Mail UK, Shanghai have the final say and are determined to get Ighalo back, having offered the former Watford player a two-year contract extension until 2024 on improved terms of £400,000 a week.

United paid a £3m loan fee for Ighalo at the end of January and have also been contributing £130,000 to his weekly wages, even though they haven’t played in two-and-a-half months.

Having initially taken him on loan until May 31, they want to keep Ighalo until the end of August when the season is now expected to finish, but Shanghai have refused to budge in negotiations.

‘We are convinced that we can win the Champions League. We have to improve some things, but without a doubt we are convinced that the team has the potential to win the Champions League.

‘We can win it. We are convinced we can win the Champions League, of course we can,’ Setien told beIN Sports.

Setien took over from Ernesto Valverde in January and has been hoping to deliver Barca’s first Champions League since 2015.

Lionel Messi and his teammates suffered three consecutive quarter-final defeats before Liverpool inflicted another major blow last term. In the semi-final first leg, Barca defeated Liverpool 3 -0 at Nou Camp, but in the second leg at Anfield, Liverpool produced one of the greatest comebacks as they hit Barca 4 – 0 without a reply.

The win for Liverpool, ended the Real Madrid’s dominance in 2019 after they had won three-straight Champions League titles after the Catalans’ 2015 triumph.
