It costs over N400k to treat one COVID-19 patient – Governor El-Rufai
Governor of Kaduna, Nasir el-Rufai, says it costs about N400,000 to treat a COVID-19 patient in the state.
Speaking on Monday during an executive committee meeting with traditional rulers chaired by Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, the governor said the amount is as a result of the increasing cost of drugs, feeding, and personal protective equipment (PPE) for doctors.
El-Rufai said the government cannot tell patients to bear the cost of the treatment because it will lead to further spread of the disease.
“We have a very high success rate in treating COVID-19 patients. Even a 90-year-old person, with underlying conditions, diabetes and hypertension was treated successfully in the state,” el-Rufai said.
“The virus has not left us. We may ignore it, but it is still there. We urge you to sensitise our people to protect themselves against this virus, particularly those that are above the age of 60.
“It costs about N400,000 to treat one coronavirus patient. They have to be isolated and fed. The cost of medicine has increased, even the personal protective equipment that the doctors treating them have to wear.
When you add all this up, the average cost of treatment is over N400,000 per person. We have to bear the cost.”
In March, el-Rufai contracted COVID-19, but he recovered after nearly four weeks. Kaduna has recorded a total of 2,214 COVID-19 cases so far.
It was not the first time a state official would spark reactions over the cost of treating a coronavirus patient.
Although Gov. El-Rufai’s estimate appears to indicate that his state spends approximately N29,000 per day on patients who receive 14-day medical care, that is far lower than the cost estimate provided by Lagos in July.
On July 24, the Lagos state government triggered a public outcry after it said the government spends between N500,000 and to N1 million a day to treat COVID-19 patients in critical conditions. It also said non-complicated admissions cost around N100,000 per day.
That means that for critical cases, Lagos may be spending between 7-14 million in handling each critical case on 14-day admission. Non-complicated cases may be costing the state at least N1.4million for 14-day admission.
Government expenditures on COVID-19 have remained a sore point for Nigerians largely because of the lack of transparency in the spendings.
Gistflash gathered some reactions to Mr El-Rufai’s claim. See comments below:
When has he become a doctor?
The real drama behind the Index is finally dancing Azonto in the market square.

That’s Kaduna computation, I hope people will not be fainting on the street when they release that of Kano and Lagos….
Bunch of scammers.
We would have no reason to doubt him if only he could account for what the 400million was spent on. I’m certain this same person would demand for the nitty-gritty of all expenses made by his employees
Now we see and know the reason for the number of cases recorded and still recording…..
Nigeria should win Oscar for best drama producing country!
Really ? Could that be the reason States were competing for number of positive cases? 400k per a patient. That means it will stay longer like Poliomyelitis. Soon first ladies will start floating NGO for Covid- 19. Chai ! Diaris God oooo!
The problem is thaf these leaders don’t ask question when thwy bring adulterated bills. I have been to some of these so call covid centers. And i see nothing that cost so much. You guys are just cashing in with this covid. We know how much u pay the health works & cost of PPE.

Is it the same Nigerian youths that are more interested in Big Brother than what is going on in the Country? Have you not noticed that this Government enacts new bizarre policies or increment in prices usually during the Big Brother season?
Mr El-Rufai is simply telling us that Kaduna State has spent more than 880m naira on covid-19 patients…
Lagos said 1m and Kaduna state says 400k. Why don’t we wait for the exaggerated amount of other states? 😁

Woman loses hearing in one ear after mild Covid-19 infection
Woman loses hearing in one ear after mild Covid-19 infection
A woman identified as Meredith Harrell lost her hearing in one ear after mild Covid-19 Infection.
According to Elizabeth Cohen, CNN Senior Medical Correspondent, Harrell was walking from her backyard into the house, her right ear suddenly started to ring.
She realized that, other than the ringing, she couldn’t hear anything out of that ear.”It was like someone flipped a switch,” she said.
Harrell’s hearing loss was a mystery until about a week later, when she took a Covid-19 test. It was positive.
Even though she never felt sick, an otologist — a doctor who specializes in hearing — explained to Harrell that the virus was likely the culprit.Meredith Harrell with her son, Mason. The family tested positive for Covid-19.
Viruses such as measles, mumps and meningitis are known to sometimes cause sudden hearing loss, and there’s growing evidence that the novel coronavirus should be added to the list.
“We’re hearing more and more that people have hearing loss as part of their Covid infection,” said Dr. Matthew Stewart, associate professor of otolaryngology at Johns Hopkins Medicine.
There are no statistics on how common it is for people who’ve had Covid-19 to experience hearing loss, but a few small studies point to a possible link.
A team in Manchester, England, asked Covid-19 patients eight weeks after they’d been discharged from the hospital whether they’d experienced any hearing changes or ringing in their ears.
Of the 138 patients in the study, published in the International Journal of Audiology, 13% said yes.
He said the reason is that the coronavirus is known to cause blood clots in other areas of the body, and he thinks that could be happening in the “extremely small blood vessels” in the inner ear.
Kevin Munro, an audiological scientist who co-authored the study in Manchester, said he thinks that theory makes sense.”
The capillaries in the inner ear are the smallest in the human body, so it wouldn’t take much to block them,” he said.
Munro and his team at the University of Manchester are planning larger studies on Covid-19 and hearing loss.
Until then, they’re not sure why it seems like some Covid-19 patients develop hearing loss while others don’t.
Okada Rider Hangs Himself to Death in Ibadan
Okada Rider commits suicide in Ibadan
A commercial motorcyclist identified as Sarafa Ayuba has hung himself in Ibadan.
GISTFLASH learnt that the 22-year-old commercial motorcyclist hung himself in an uncompleted building beside his uncle’s house at Amuloko area in Ibadan on Friday.
This incident happened in Ona Ara local government area of Ibadan in Oyo State.
According to Ayuba’s uncle, Kazeem Tijani, his nephew left home on Thursday but did not return till he was found in the uncompleted building.
Mr Tijani added that two black plastic bags were seen on the ground with his (Ayuba) pair of sandals also there.
Items found in the bags included a white garment, two types of perfume, a new white singlet, chin chin, and biscuits.
“Ayuba got the motorcycle on hire purchase basis and he was paying the instalments adequately. He was my brother’s son. He was not indebted to anyone and he was not starving at all. He has been living with me for the past two to three years.
“He was working with me before he got okada. He was initially a tailor and he was doing fine. We have searched his room but we could not find any note that he could have left; though we could not search his body. I have called our relations in Apomu; they are on their way.”
However, when the PRO of the State’s police command ‘Olugbenga Fadeyi’ was contacted, he said he was not aware of the incident.
He said, “someone has called me but, I said that I have not heard about it. If anyone attempts to kill himself and is caught, he will be arrested because attempted suicide is a criminal offence.
“Attempted murder is a criminal offence. But, I will find out from the DPO in Ogbere or Akanran if they are aware of the incident.”
But the chairperson, Okada Riders Association, Amuloko branch, Oluwatosin James, confirmed the incident.
According to him, the news of Ayuba’s death came to them as a rude shock. they heard the news at early hours of Saturday morning while at the park.
“He was very respectful and would not fight anybody. Once he did his okada business in the morning, he would go and park and go to his uncle’s shop to assist him.
“Out of N390,000 that he got for the Okada on instalment, only N77,000 that is remaining. There was no issue of threat to him from the person who gave him the okada.
“In fact, the person is like a brother to him. So, we are confounded over this incident.” He added.
